How to Deep Clean Your Washing Machine Drum
Published on: August 19, 2026
Your washing machine cleans your clothes, but who cleans the washing machine? Over time, soap scum, fabric softener residue, and minerals from hard water can build up in the drum, leading to mold and a musty smell.
DIY Drum Cleaning Guide
If your clothes are coming out smelling less than fresh, follow these steps:
- Step 1: Clean the Rubber Gasket (Front Loaders). Wipe the inside of the rubber door seal with a cloth dipped in white vinegar. This is where mold loves to hide.
- Step 2: Use a Descaling Powder. Pour a washing machine descaling powder (like Scalgo) directly into the empty drum. Do not put it in the detergent drawer.
- Step 3: Run a Hot Cycle. Select the "Tub Clean" cycle if your machine has one. If not, select the hottest, longest cycle available (usually 60°C or 90°C) and let it run empty.
- Step 4: Clean the Filter. Open the small hatch at the bottom of the machine and clean out the drain filter.
- Step 5: Leave the Door Open. Always leave the door slightly open after every wash to allow the drum to dry completely.
