Why is My Refrigerator Freezing Everything? Overcooling Explained

Published on: August 19, 2026

It is incredibly frustrating to open your refrigerator to grab a fresh vegetable, only to find it frozen solid. If your fridge is acting like a freezer, here is what might be going wrong.

1. The Temperature Setting is Too Low

It sounds obvious, but accidentally bumping the temperature dial is the most common cause. The ideal temperature for the fresh food section is between 3°C and 4°C. Check your settings first.

2. Faulty Thermostat

The thermostat monitors the temperature and tells the compressor when to run. If the thermostat is broken, it may continuously signal the compressor to run, causing the fridge to freeze everything.

3. Broken Air Damper

Cold air is generated in the freezer and flows into the fridge through an air damper. If the damper gets stuck in the "open" position, too much freezing air will flood into the refrigerator section.

4. Dirty Condenser Coils

If the coils at the back or bottom of your fridge are heavily coated in dust, the fridge has to work overtime to cool down, which can sometimes result in overcooling the interior.
